High School Cross Country Results from Aug. 19
Marble Falls at the Johnson City 1.5-mile Relay Meet
Boys varsity (junior Nick Dahl and sophomores Ezekiel Atkinson, Blake Cockrell and Tyler Hamblin) finished second in 33:33
Head coach Chris Schrader noted that while the Mustangs didn’t break their own meet record set last year with a team of seniors, this year’s four runners showed they have what it takes to set their own history. Cockrell pulled the team from third to second thanks to finishing in 8 minutes and 24 seconds.
“Blake is starting to realize his immense potential,” Schrader said. “Tyler Hamblin (8:41) cut into Westwood’s senior-laden team lead with a creditable 8:01, which was 41 seconds faster than last year. I am seeing improvement in the team’s fitness level, and that is what we plan to optimize on.”
Dahl finished in 7:56 and Atkinson was done in 9:12.
Girls junior varsity (freshmen Ruby Carillo, Hanna Rivera, Carmella Lozano, Tori Thompson), finished seond in 50:40
“Note that this is the beginning of the season and these young ladies ran in training shoes instead of spikes,” Schrader said. “I anticipate better results when they graduate to spikes in the next three weeks.”
Carillo clocked 12:28, Rivera was done in 13:34, Lozano crossed the finish line in 12:31, and Thompson completed the course in 12:07.
Boys junior varsity runners ran as individuals
Marco Almazan finished in 8:40 for first place, while Daniel Dominguez clocked 9:43 for third, and Hunter Holder completed the course in 10:10 for fifth.
“Last year Marco ran 9:08,” the coach said. “Marco is committed to the team and improved steadily.”
Schrader added he was pleased with how each runner competed.
“As temperatures come down and distance and intensity go up, their fitness levels should shine through,” he said.
The Burnet High School cross country team competed at the Battle for Wilco Park Aug. 19. It’s a two-runner event. Senior Hudson Bennett and sophomore Victor Aviles teamed up to finish second overall in the boys varsity race. Bennett finished in 9 minutes and 53 seconds, while Aviles was done in 10:23. The top Lady Dawgs were the pair of Asah Roy, who was done in 12:50, and Amelia Griffin, who finished in 14:23.
